THE LAKEWOODS

In Toledo, Ohio, Elisabeth Knibbe Architects assisted American Community Developers with the renovation of the abandoned Maumee Valley Hospital to create subsidized elderly housing.

Although EKA was not the project architect, the firm both assisted in qualifying the project for federal historic preservation tax credits and in restoring the building's Beaux Arts façade.

Historic wood windows were restored and reinstalled in the most prominent location at the front façade. All other windows were replaced with new aluminum windows that replicated the appearance of the original historic windows.

EKA also assisted with restoration of the masonry. Work included cleaning, tuckpointing and replacement of deteriorated decorative stone. The completed project preserves an important piece of Toledo's history while adapting an interesting historic building to provide affordable housing that meets contemporary standards.
